Adult & Senior Eye Exams

Eye exams are a crucial part of preventative health that everyone should be aware of. As we age, we gain a higher risk of developing eye diseases that can effectively steal our vision — many of which cause patients to exhibit no symptoms in the early stages.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends a specific exam schedule for adults:

  • Adults between 20 to 39 should undergo an eye examination every 2 to 3 years.
  • Adults between 40 to 64 should undergo an eye examination every 2 years.
  • Adults over 65 should undergo an eye examination annually.

Those considered “at-risk” may be required to have their eyes examined more frequently to prevent permanent vision loss. At Milton Eye and Vision Care, we love seeing our patients and helping them maintain good vision. For that reason, we recommend visiting us annually regardless of age to ensure your eyes are properly cared for.

Children’s Eye Exams

Your child’s eyes grow and develop rapidly as they age, making it incredibly important to have their eyes examined regularly. Early detection and treatment of common pediatric eye diseases are crucial to ensure their healthy development and later success in school and work. Since 80% of all learning is visual, taking care of your child’s eyes in their early years helps give them a chance at a bright, clear future.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends a specific exam schedule for children:

  • Infants and toddlers should undergo their first eye exam between the ages of 6 and 9 months.
  • Preschool children should undergo at least one eye examination between the ages of 2 and 5 years.
  • School children aged 6 to 19 years should undergo an eye examination annually.

If your child is at particular risk, we may recommend bringing them in for more frequent exams.

Diabetic Eye Exams

Diabetes is a chronic condition that controls how your body produces and uses insulin, a hormone that regulates your blood glucose levels. Over time, if unmanaged, diabetes can lead to the development of degenerative eye diseases that can steal your vision.

Types of diabetic eye disease include:

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when the blood vessels in the back of the eye become damaged due to elevated blood glucose levels. The damaged blood vessels swell, burst, and leak blood and other fluid into the eye, causing scarring, increased intraocular pressure, and impaired vision.

Diabetic macular edema results from untreated diabetic retinopathy. The leakage from damaged blood vessels causes the tissues surrounding the macula to swell and deteriorate, leading to central vision loss.

Contact Lens Exams & Fittings

If you regularly wear eyeglasses to correct a refractive error like myopia or hyperopia but are interested in a glasses-free life, contact lenses may be the answer! We carry contact lenses for all ages and vision needs.

Contact lenses are typically easy to get used to wearing and provide increased freedom and comfort for many wearers. Contact lenses are an excellent option for individuals that lead active lifestyles or work specific jobs where eyeglasses can get in the way.

If you are interested in contact lenses, there are several different styles and types that may suit you and your eyes best. We will perform various measurements and tests to ensure contact lenses are right for you and make a recommendation to keep you seeing clearly and comfortably!
